At Montgomery County Animal Shelter, our mission has always been to provide compassionate care, safety, and a pathway to a positive outcome for every animal that enters our doors. We believe it is important to be transparent with our community about the realities shelters across the country are facing, including our own.
Under current shelter policy, dogs that have remained in our care for 12 months or longer may become subject to euthanasia review. This is not a decision that is made lightly, nor is it a timeline that automatically results in euthanasia. Every animal is evaluated individually, and every effort is made to find an alternative outcome before such a decision is considered.
The reality is that we are facing a significant pet overpopulation crisis. Intake numbers continue to rise while available kennel space remains limited. As a municipal shelter, we must balance the needs of animals currently in our care with our responsibility to provide safe housing and humane treatment for animals that continue to arrive daily.
We want our community to know that Montgomery County Animal Shelter does everything within its power to prevent euthanasia. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to promote adoptions, build relationships with rescue organizations, facilitate foster placements, provide enrichment, and seek every possible avenue to give animals the opportunity for a second chance.
The success we have achieved in recent years would not be possible without the support of our community. Rescues, fosters, adopters, volunteers, donors, and advocates have played a critical role in helping us save lives and create positive outcomes for countless animals. Your willingness to open your homes, donate your time, and support our mission has made an immeasurable difference.
Today, more than ever, we need that support to continue. Every adoption creates space for another animal in need. Every foster home provides relief for a dog struggling in a shelter environment. Every rescue partner helps us reach animals that may otherwise have limited options.
To everyone who has adopted, fostered, rescued, volunteered, donated, or shared our animals with others: thank you. Your compassion and commitment have helped save countless lives, and we are deeply grateful for your continued partnership.
Together, we can continue working toward solutions that reduce overpopulation, increase positive outcomes, and give more animals the opportunity to find the loving homes they deserve.
