Montgomery County High School football fans, players, MCHS band members, cheerleaders, etc., traded in the Indians' red and blue for purple and gold to pay tribute to the Trojans Saturday!
As part of this year's Recreation Bowl, it was Trojan Retro Night, honoring the 1969 Class A state champs from Mt. Sterling High School!
Members of the '69 championship team took the field, roughly a dozen of them, along with one of the cheerleaders and the only living coach, Dave Griffin.
Head Coach Chili Ishmael and assistants Don Dombroskas and Ken Tippett are no longer living.
Don Lane, the Hall of Fame basketball coach at Transylvania University, was also on the staff at that time and acted as sort of a general manager for the squad.
The event came about through the work of local resident Jeff Vice, MCHS Football Coach Joe Chirico and staff, boosters, sponsors, etc.
Vice handed the trophy to Dave and then walked it down the line so everyone could touch it.
The MCHS Band marched from the high school down to a Trojans tailgate area and played the Trojan fight song prior to the game's start.
The Indians didn't get the "W" Saturday night, but all in attendance agree that didn't matter. For one night, under the football stadium lights at Cunningham Field and despite whether wearing the Indians' red/blue or the Trojan purple/gold—everyone on hand was united for one thing specifically—a love for the sport and our community!
It was certainly, those who participated say, another memory that will go down in the history books!
