Chamber/Economic Development Director addresses KFC closure

Jason Rainey says his office is happy to help employees as they transition to next opportunity

Posted
The Advocate has received a statement from Jason Rainey, executive eirector of Mt. Sterling-Montgomery County Economic Development/Chamber of Commerce, in reference the closing of the local KFC restaurant.

“I’m disappointed that Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is closing its doors locally.  It’s a restaurant that represents what’s the best of our state in name recognition, and the story of KFC’s rise many years ago," Rainey said.

“However, we are at an interesting pivotal point in the current season of the national economy— with fuel cost continuing to rise, impacting every area of business, inflation rising, these franchise type businesses will continue to see pressure on their margins for operations.  You can’t raise prices enough to account for the increases in operational costs, so we may see franchisees like this see pressure.  Most importantly the people, these employees are who we think of and our office is happy to help any of them as they transition to their next opportunity.

“Finally, in a post COVID economy we are seeing shopping patterns of consumers permanently shifted, and we have been working intentionally on recruitment of businesses whose business model can be successful in those patterns," Rainey's statement concludes.

The Advocate has inquiries in to the franchise management company regarding the closure but had not heard back at the time of this posting.

Planning and Zoning also when contacted said they currently have no information regarding any potential plans for the property.

News that KFC in Mt. Sterling had closed began circulating on social media yesterday.
