A Mt. Sterling woman was arrested Feb. 28 after authorities allegedly seized approximately an ounce of fentanyl in her possession along with drug paraphernalia and more than $1,000 in cash, according to Mt. Sterling Police.

Megan L. Johnson, 39, is charged with aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance, more than 10 grams of carfentanil/fentanyl derivatives; promoting contraband-fentanyl, carfentanil or derivative; tampering with physical evidence; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Det. Ashton Thornberry claims in a uniform citation that Johnson was the subject of an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Thornberry said in the citation he received information that Johnson was allegedly en route to Mt. Sterling with fentanyl.

A social media post shared by the MSPD specifically says that detectives with the MSPD and Gateway Area Drug Task Force were informed about "an individual transporting large quantities of fentanyl from Lexington to Montgomery County."

The citation claims Johnson had an outstanding Montgomery County warrant.

At 3:40 a.m., officers and investigators with the MSPD conducted a traffic stop. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was contacted for use of its on-duty K9, according to the social media post.

Sgt. Jared Garland arrived with Yago and conducted a free air sniff and Yago reportedly gave positive indicators on the vehicle.

Johnson was allegedly found in possession of multiple small baggies, digital scales and syringes in her purse along with $1,075 in cash.

Once at the Montgomery County Regional Jail, the citation claims deputies allegedly located another wrapped bag of suspected fentanyl inside a body cavity of Johnson.

That bag allegedly weighed 26 grams bringing the total amount of fentanyl to just over 1 ounce, according to the citation.

The MSPD's social media post says the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests or charges may follow.
