Having survived the collapse of the World Trade Centers in New York, Keith Johnson now finds joy in rescuing dogs who have survived tragedy themselves.
Last week he made the 11-hour drive from Staten Island to Mt. Sterling to adopt a silver Labrador from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
Johnson said he always wanted a silver lab.
The dog was referred to as Blue at the shelter, even though more times than not he failed answer to the name.
Johnson said he will find a name to fit the dog’s personality once he gets back to New York. He was in Mt. Sterling March 4.
Johnson said that when Karen Hendren, a transportation coordinator for two rescues who lives in Lexington, contacted him recently he was all in. He got to know Karen years earlier during a trip to Lexington.
Hendren located Blue on a shelter social media post.
Johnson has a fondness for dogs with difficult backgrounds. He previously adopted two dogs, Frank and Beans, that were severely abused. He still has Frank, but Beans has since passed away.
Johnson wanted a replacement for Beans.
That’s when he learned about Blue, which came from an alleged animal hoarding case in Montgomery County, Animal Shelter Director Adam Grubb told the Advocate.
Blue is a high energy dog.
Pat Henry, president and founder of the local animal rescue Love of Paws, told the Advocate Blue will appreciate the open outdoors.
Johnson said he plans to take the dog on long walks at a park near his residence where dogs are welcome. He also has a large yard, he said.
Hendren said Blue and Johnson are a good fit because Johnson has a big heart for dogs who have been mistreated in the past.
“He will take animals people won’t typically take,” Hendren said. “He doesn’t back off from that.”
Johnson said he has a special place in his heart for dogs with troubled pasts.
“Every dog that I’ve adopted has turned out to be a great dog, they just needed time,” Johnson said.
The shelter is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. It is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
The shelter is located on Adena Drive.
