St. Patrick’s Day is traditionally a fun holiday that people spend consuming Irish-inspired food and drinks, at parades, wearing green to avoid being pinched and wishing for good luck.
For Amber Griggs, March 17 this year was marked with tragedy. Griggs, who resides in Morehead, lost her 14-year-old pit bull.
What she didn’t know is that misfortune would quickly turn completely around, all thanks to a Montgomery County Animal Shelter dog who kept coming up empty as far as potential adopters. The shelter says Rambo was passed over multiple times—spending 479 days in the shelter.
He became he shelter’s longest resident.
That changed April 2 when Rambo walked out of the shelter and into a second chance at life with Amber and her family. She and her husband have two children, ages 7 and 9.
Amber said she firmly believes her path crossing with Rambo wasn’t by chance or luck, but rather it was simply just “meant to be.”
“It was really hard losing my dog. We were already used to having a dog that you can’t have around other animals or that is maybe scary looking or kind of intimidating,” Amber told the Advocate.
“Rambo kept popping up on Facebook. I think he popped up three or four times. He looks a lot like the dog I lost,” she added.
Shelter staff said they couldn’t quite figure out why Rambo spent so much time at the shelter, but they suspected his size was a deterrent. He is described as a sweet, gentle giant who loves pig ears and his green lamb chop and was best suited for a single dog household.
In addition, the shelter noted Rambo loves kisses and being with people—a perfect match for the Griggs family.
“My dog was older and she wouldn’t play or cuddle. My kids kept asking (for a dog) and Rambo just kept popping up. I told my husband I felt like it was just meant to be. He had been there the longest and his story ... he was just right.”
Today, Rambo is enjoying running in a yard, napping on the family’s couch and playing.
“They will lay down in the floor and cuddle with him and he will just wrap his arms around them. ... He jumps up on the couch and just melts into it ... it’s great,” Amber said.
Her children were on spring break last week and returned to school Monday, April 6.
“He rode with us this morning (Monday) to drop the kids off at school and as soon as the kids got out he started whining.”
Amber shared on the shelter’s social media page, “Rambo has been such a great addition to our family. He is such a big, cuddly baby. My kids absolutely adore him and I believe he adores them as well. ... Thank you so much Montgomery County Animal Shelter for everything. We definitely love him.”
