MOCO boys’ soccer team impresses at Centre camp

Posted

The Montgomery County boys’ soccer team returned from one of Kentucky’s premier summer camps with valuable experience and momentum as the Indians continue preparing for the upcoming season.

The Varsity Indians recently attended the 37th soccer camp at Centre College, the longtime summer camp directed by Centre men’s soccer coach Jeb Burch. Held immediately after the KHSAA dead period each summer, the camp gives teams an opportunity to improve both on and off the field.

Players stayed in the campus dorms, building team chemistry while taking part in speed and agility testing, training with college and professional coaches, media sessions and both small-sided and 11-on-11 matches against varsity teams from across the state.

The Indians posted a 4-2 record in league play, earning wins over a team made up of guest players from various high schools, Central Hardin, Danville, and Meade County. The Indians’ only losses came against defending Region 1 champion McCracken County and defending Region 11 champion and state semifinalist Bryan Station, which will visit Mt. Sterling during the regular season.

Junior Colton Martin led the Indians in goals during the weekend, with junior Cailen Vice, last season’s leading scorer, close behind. Junior Oliver Smith and sophomores Tucker Miller, Emery Crowe and Connor Spencer also scored.

Martin and Vice were also invited to participate in a scrimmage with the college players attending the camp.

Three Indians earned All-Camp Team honors: senior captain Chace Lopez, junior Colton Martin and sophomore Caleb Davidson.

Montgomery County competed without senior captains Charlie Hughes, who was at club national championships, Waylon Stewart, who was attending the Governor’s School for the Performing Arts and Carter Poe who was finishing his summer baseball season.

The Indians also welcomed three guest players for the weekend, including two goalkeepers from East Jessamine and a field player from Harrison County.

The week provided Montgomery County with quality competition, valuable instruction and an opportunity to strengthen team chemistry as the Indians continue preparing for the 2026 season.
