Fire Dept. to conduct smoke detector canvas Saturday

Posted

The Montgomery County Fire Dept. will be doing a smoke detector canvas beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in selected areas. The dept. had smoke detectors donated.

The canvas locations include Greenhill Subdivision, Parkview Place and Trimble Trailer Park areas in Mt. Sterling and the Lycento Lodge and Cartwright Drive areas of Camargo and Park Avenue area of Jeffersonville.

The areas were identified as in possible need by fire dept. staff, Fire Marshal Jerry Burnham told the Advocate.

During the canvas, firefighters will replace batteries or install free smoke detectors, Burnham said.

“We need to reach as many people as we can because it’s starting to get colder and people are turning to heating sources,” he said.

During this time of year, homes are more susceptible to fire with the use of electric heaters and fireplaces, Burnham said, which places more importance on smoke detectors.

The public, however, can request a smoke detector inspection or have them installed for free anytime of year by calling 859-498-1318.

“It doesn’t have to be in the canvas time,” Burnham said.

Firefighters will be in marked fire vehicles or ambulances and will be in uniform, he said.

Another canvas will be conducted in the spring in selected areas.

The dept. receives grants and donations toward the smoke detector program and you can contribute by writing a check to the Montgomery County Fire Dept. and delivering it to the Bypass fire station, Burnham said.
