From Ky. Dept of Fish and Wildlife:
Some people can bear-ly believe it, but yes… there are bears in Kentucky!
In fact, it’s the time of year when sightings become more frequent as young black bears are out searching for food and new territory, even outside of their usual mountain ranges.
Here is your reminder that if you come across a young bear, do not feed it or approach it!
Feeding bears creates problems for both you and the bear, as it causes them to lose their natural fear of humans, which can lead to unsafe encounters and often results in harm to the bear. Plus, they don’t need it - they have everything they need in their natural environment.
(Feeding bears is also illegal in Kentucky. So, there’s that, too!)
Here are some tips on how to stay bear-wise in your own backyard:
1. Never feed or approach bears
2. Secure food, garbage, and recycling
3. Remove bird feeders when bears are active
4. Never leave pet food outdoors
5. Clean/store grills and smokers
6. Alert neighbors to bear activity
Let’s all do our part to protect wildlife and keep our communities safe.
