The following is a statement from Chris Barrier, Chief Operations Officer, for Montgomery County Schools in regard to the rattlesnake discovered at MCHS Wednesday. Barrier said the rattlesnake was discovered outside the gymnasium Wednesday, Sept. 30, after school.
"The snake was initially observed by a school staff member, who immediately alerted others, including the School Police Department. A local citizen with extensive knowledge and experience handling snakes responded and safely secured the animal before relocating it to its natural habitat.
As an additional precaution, David Walters and the school maintenance team removed the existing bushes and vegetation located next to the gymnasium to ensure there were no other snakes in the immediate vicinity. No additional snakes were found.
The safety of our students and staff remained the top priority throughout the situation. The snake was discovered after school, and at no point were any students confronted or engaged by the animal. Appropriate safety precautions were taken, and the area was addressed before normal activities continued.
We appreciate the quick actions of our staff, School Police, and maintenance team, as well as the assistance provided by the local citizen who safely relocated the animal," Barrier's statement concluded.
