The Montgomery County Lady Indians had gone into competition in the 10th Region Tournament for 17 consecutive games without losing.
That was until Saturday when Clark County battled back after an impressive Montgomery County comeback, to win the 2010 10th Region championship.
The title was the first for Clark County since 1995 with Montgomery County having won nine crowns since the Cardinals last claimed the title.
But this time Clark County managed to stifle the Montgomery County offense to come away with the victory.
“We really did execute our game plan,” said Coach Janie Robinson. “We just couldn’t score at the end.”
The first quarter was a nightmare for a regional final as the two teams collectively hit four of 17 field goal attempts and Montgomery County committed nine turnrovers with the end result being a 6-4 lead for Clark County.
In the second period things picked up a little but the score was still only 15-14 in Montgomery County’s favor at the halftime break.
The Lady Indians had a 17-14 lead early in the second half when they missed a couple of chances to extend the lead and failed to do so.
Clark County finally got moving in the latter stages of the third quarter when Taylor Kindred and Jewell Rogers hit three-point shots and Clark County pulled out to a 34-25 lead heading into the final quarter.
Then the Lady Indians made an improbable comeback based on what they did the rest of the game.
Freshman Olivia Colliver got loose for a layup to cut the lead to 34-27 and then Destiney Taul hit one of a pair of free throws to make it 34-28.
Then Colliver got a pass in the deep left corner in transition and she drained a three-point shot, was fouled on the play and sank a free throw for a four-point play that pulled Montgomery County within two and then with just over five minutes to play senior Jenny Lausti drove past the defense to score to tie the game at 34-34 with 5:13 to play completing a 9-0 run in 2:47.
But Montgomery County would manage only a Destiney Taul free throw over the final 5:13 and Clark County pulled out to win going away.
Clark had a balanced attack led by senior post player Kayla Jones who had 13 followed by junior Taylor Kindred with 12 and Preshia Rogers with 11.
Montgomery County was unable to solve the Clark defense on the inside as the Cardinals held post players Mary Jehlik and Macie Spence to just five points.
Fouls were part of the reason. Jehlik had four fouls early in the third quarter and ended up sitting out about half of the game while Spence also had to spend considerable minutes on the bench.
Jehlik had just two field goal attempts. Montgomery County did manage to dominate the glass with Spence pulling down a dozen to lead the Indians to a 46-33 advantage there.
But the Tribe gave up that advantage when they turned the ball over 22 times to Clark County’s 12.
Clark’s three leading scorers, Jones, Kindred and Preshia Rogers combined for 22 of their 36 points after the intermission.
The win was Clark’s third over the Indians in four attempts this season. Montgomery County has still won 21 of the last 25 meetings between the two schools after the three wins by the Lady Cards this season.
