Kenneth Brasiel has been now been found competent to stand trial for murder a second time.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge William “Bill” Lane ruled Brasiel competent at a March 3 court hearing in which he heard testimony from Dr. Amy Trivett, a psychiatrist at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in LaGrange.
Trivett observed Brasiel for several weeks at KCPC. She testified at the hearing by telephone.
Following the ruling Lane set a new trial date for the case. The trial is scheduled for July 26-28.
Brasiel, 55, is charged with the Jan. 26, 2009 murder of 51-year-old Darrell Neeley, identified by authorities as a caregiver at a home for veterans in rural Montgomery County.
Authorities allege that Neeley was stabbed in the heart with a pocket knife during a dispute over a cigarette.
Brasiel was found competent once before. He underwent an evaluation at KCPC shortly after his arrest when he appeared confused during his arraignment.
The second evaluation was requested after jail staff reported that Brasiel was acting erratically shortly after he returned.
