I-64 accident claims life of local resident

9/4/2009

A man is dead after a head-on collision on I-64 near exit 110 in the early morning hours Tuesday, said Kentucky State Police dispatcher Gary Thomas.
Traffic was delayed and down to one lane heading east on I-64 near Mt. Sterling for most of the day after the accident.
Sylvester Robbins, 51, of Mt. Sterling and formerly of Somerset, was traveling westbound on I-64 in a black Dodge pickup truck when he crossed the median into the eastbound lane, striking a semi head on, a KSP press release said.
The pickup truck deflected off the front of the semi, stopping in the median. The semi was able to stop on the shoulder in the eastbound lane, the release said.
Robbins was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Wally Johnson. Robbins was reportedly traveling to work at Amazon.com in Lexington and had a history of low blood glucose, a Lexington news station said. Funeral arrangements are pending at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home in Somerset.
The driver of the semi, Eugene Huneke of Virginia, was treated at St. Joseph Mt. Sterling and released.
The accident remains under investigation.
