The wrestling season is under way and Wednesday night, (Dec. 12) the MCHS wrestling team and McNabb Middle School wrestling team were scheduled to take on McCreary Central in the first home match of the season.
Coach Rocky Franz and his team will have two more home dates on Jan. 26 and Jan. 30 of next year.
Although the program continues to gain momentum, Coach Rocky Franz says the team will struggle in dual meets this year.
“We have some classes where we don’t have wrestlers and that makes it difficult to win dual events,” he said. “We had some really promising freshmen who could have filled some of those gaps but they didn’t stick with it. But by regional time I feel like we’ll be really solid and ready to compete.”
Headling the squad, which has 21 wrestlers, is senior Ross Carpentier who has a record of 11-3 at the 119 weight category and he’s now set to wrestle at 112. Ross was fifth in the state in 2007.
Heavyweight Dennis Coomer is officially 0-0 having won two of three exhibitions so far. He won 30 matches last year and placed fourth in Region 7.
Also, Rex Stephens is 13-6 at 112 and is expected to wrestle in the 119 weight group and Johnson Anderson is 16-3 and placed third last weekend at Seneca in the 103 weight group.
Franz said that junior Jeremy Hawkins and sophomore Dustin Barnett are both looking good. The team did suffer a setback Monday when seventh grader Michael Hawkins suffered a broken ankle.
“We have our middle school program going and our elementary school program as well,” Franz said. “The administration has really been behind us in trying to get this thing off the ground and done right.”
The varsity squad currently consists of four seniors, three juniors and eight sophomores. They are also carrying four freshmen.
The Indians will be traveling to the Horsepower Duals at Moore this weekend and will have 10 more events leading up to the regional competition on Feb. 9.
“We’ve got several young wrestlers to go with our veterans that have a chance to make some noise at the regionals,” Franz added. “It’s just a question of how hard they’re willing to work.”
Franz is assisted by Jimmy Griffey and Joey Hall.
