Lady Indians give Barrier first win

The Montgomery County Lady Indians used a big night at the free throw line Friday night to score a 68-56 win over Pendleton County at the MCHS Arena.

The victory was the first coaching victory at Montgomery County for Beth Barrier as the Lady Indians evened their record at 1-1.
Senior guard Delaney Bromagen had a rough night from the field but was solid from the free throw line where she made 17 of 22 shots en route to a 25-point performance.

Freshman guard Kennon Owens also enjoyed success at the foul line, hitting nine of a dozen shots as she scored 13 points and sophomore guard Bailey Cobb was also four of four and finished with 13 points.
The total numbers showed Montgomery County getting to the foul line 48 times and making 37 for 77 percent and that was the difference.

Pendleton County connected on 22 of 30 free throws.

Those free throws helped the Lady Indians overcome their second straight game where they struggled from the field.

The Tribe hit just 12 of 46 field goal attempts but did hit nine of 25 three-pointers for a respectable 36 percent.

Pendleton County got out to the early lead in the game. The Lady Wildcats were on top 10-8 after the opening period.
But Montgomery County began to pick up their offense and moved on top 23-21 at halftime.

In the second half Montgomery County would score 45 points, as many as they had scored in the first game and a half of the season.
The Tribe led 43-38 heading into the final period and was able to continue to build on the lead in the final period.

While Bromagen, Owens and Cobb were scoring the bulk of the points, seventh grader Shae Harris added six points, making her only field goal attempt and hitting four of six from the foul line.
Junior Kaitlyn Barber added five points, including hitting a three-point shot with Haley Stephens scoring three and Kaylan Kerns one to round out the scoring.

Sophomore guard Shelby Turner led Pendleton County with 23 points. She had three three-pointers and made eight of nine from the foul line while sophomore guard Samantha Verst added 12 points, hitting seven of 10 free throws.

Montgomery County was whistled for 26 fouls in the game and had three players—Kaitlyn Barber, Shae Harris and Kennon Owens—foul out.
Pendleton County was called for 34 fouls and lost Sydney Manor and Olivia Verst to fouls.

Montgomery County won the battle on the glass, 39-36, with Bromagen, Stephens and Owens each pulling down six rebounds. Shae Harris had five and Kaitlyn Barber and Makayla Harris finished with four each.
Manor was the leading rebounder in the game with 11.

Bromagen, Owens and Cobb all had active floor games.
Bromagen handed out four assists, had three deflections, four steals and only one turnover in her complete game performance.

Owens also had four assists with two deflections, a steal and two blocked shots although she did turn the ball over eight times.
Cobb had two assists, two deflections and three steals with four turnovers.

Montgomery County was back in action Tuesday night with a road game at Paris as part of a 40th District boy/girl doubleheader and then tonight (Thursday) they’ll play at West Jessamine.

Next Tuesday night Montgomery County will be back at home with another district doubleheader game against Bourbon County.

The Lady Indians were overwhelmed on the road in their season opener, falling to a veteran Woodford County team at Versailles.

The Lady Jackets scored the first 17 points of the game and led 21-2 after the opening quarter, extending the lead to 39-10 at halftime.
The margin was much closer in the second half when Woodford County outscored the Lady Indians 23-13.

Kennon Owens led Montgomery County with six points while Delaney Bromagen and Adrienne Tuttle scored four points each.
Montgomery County hit just eight of 47 shots from the floor.
