The 2016-17 edition of Montgomery County High School swimming (and now, diving) is under way.

Coach Lainey Neal’s squad opened the year with their annual trip to the Laker Fall Preview at Russell County High School where they swam against teams from 12 other schools.

“This was a great way for us to open the season,” Neal said. “We had a lot of strong performances and got a lot of experience for some of the younger members of our team. I was really pleased with our effort.”
Montgomery County came in third in the overall points tally behind Scott County and Russell County. The girls were third behind Russell County and Scott County, respectively, while the boys finished second behind Scott County in the individual competition for boys and girls.
Trophies were awarded based on combined scores with the Indians tallying 667 overall points to 731 for Russell County and 896 for Scott County.

Montgomery County was one of seven co-ed teams entered in the competition that included 10 girls’ and 10 boys’ squads.

Other teams on hand were the host school, Russell County, along with Scott County, Meade County, Oneida Baptist Institute, Marion County, Allen County-Scottsville, Pulaski County, Southwestern, Barren County, Central Hardin, North Hardin and Somerset.

Individual winners
Three members of the Montgomery County squad won individual high-point honors in their respective age groups.

Senior Julianne Williams was the top scorer among all senior girls in the competition while freshman Cameron Coffey and seventh grader Samantha Coffey were also tops in their age groups.

Neal finished sixth out of eight competitors in his first outing with a score of 124.5. Bryce Gooding was sixth out of 10 girls in the competition with a score of 123.35 while Morgan Shrout was seventh with a score of 120.3 and Hayden Gooding totaled 108.7 points and finished ninth.
