Shots fired during standoff

In the aftermath of the shootings of law enforcement officers in Dallas, Texas, and Baton Route, La., local agencies got a scare Saturday afternoon.

An allegedly suicidal man reportedly threatened to harm law enforcement and fired multiple gunshots from a pistol before giving himself up, authorities said.

The alleged incident occurred at a residence on Cherry Court in Park Heights subdivision.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a call to the residence about 4:30 p.m. After making contact with the suspect, Matthew Wayne Mounce, 21, of Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Dillon asked for the assistance of a supervisor, sheriff’s Det./Sgt. Ralph Charles said.

Sgt. Tommy Parker arrived a short time later along with officers from the city police dept., Charles said.

Mounce reportedly threatened suicide and harm to any law enforcement officers who came around.

During the course of the standoff Mounce reportedly fired several rounds from his pistol, but it was not known if he targeted anyone, Charles said. Regardless, he fired a gun within a residential area, which necessitated charges, the detective said.

The incident appeared to be alcohol and drug induced, he said.
Parker negotiated with Mounce until he agreed to give himself up about 45 minutes later, Charles said. Nathan Shortridge, a detective with the Kentucky State Police, also responded to the scene.

Mounce was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Mt. Sterling Hospital to be evaluated because of the alcohol and drugs he had reportedly ingested, Charles said. An officer accompanied Mounce to the hospital in the ambulance.

After being cleared at the hospital, Mounce was taken to the Montgomery County Regional Jail.

Mounce is charged with wanton endangerment-police officer.
