Bass anglers qualify 3 for state

Saturday was a big day for the Montgomery County High School bass fishing team.

Competing with 15 other schools in Region IV at Cave Run Lake, the Indians placed three teams in the top 12 out of 45 two-man teams that were entered. All three of those duos qualify for the Kentucky State High School Athletic Association State Bass Fishing Tournament to be held May 13 and 14 at Kentucky Lake.

Coach Gene Nornhold entered six teams in the competition and all six boats were able to bring fish to the scales at the end of the competition.
Montgomery County was led by the duo of junior Quenten McGuire and freshman Brady McGuire who finished as the regional runners-up with 11 pounds 5 ounces. of fish hauled in on Saturday.
That second to Clark County’s Robert Powe and Colby Kerr who caught 13 pounds 11 ounces.

The Montgomery County teams, as a whole, easily won the weight competition with their six teams bringing in 36 pounds 4 ounces. Clark County’s teams, in total, brought in 27 pounds 11 ounces.

There are four regions in the state and up to 64 two-man teams can qualify for the state competition.

There will be 16 teams from Region IV going to the state finals and Montgomery County will have three teams competing.
The duo of junior Logan Watkins and eighth grader Kyle Workman came in eighth with a total catch of 8 pounds 1 ounce while junior Tristan Powell and junior Dalton Crowe were 12th overall with a total catch of 7 pounds 3 ounces.

Montgomery County’s other three boats came in 30th, 33rd and 37th, respectively, out of the 45 boats in the competition.

Logan Watkins and Kyle Workman of Montgomery County
Chase Soloer and Austin Branham of Allen Central
Gabriel Maynard of Shelby Valley
Matthew Roberts and Richard Cornett of Perry Central
Tristan Powell and Dalton Crowe of Montgomery County
Blake Martin and Kenneth Powers of Johnson Central
Zachary Holbrook and Jacob Boggs of Perry Central
Noah West and Eric Price of Lawrence County
Jacob Jude and Heath Maynard of Sheldon Clark
There were also teams on hand from Knott County Central, Hazard and Menifee County.

There are currently four regionals across the state for bass fishing and there will be 64 two-man teams, including the three from Montgomery County, competing in the state event.

In competition, each boat can have four designated competitors but only two can be active at one time.

This is the fourth year that bass fishing has been a KHSAA sanctioned sport and the previous winners have all been from the western part of the state — Calloway County in 2013 and Muhlenberg County, different individuals, in both 2014 and 2015.
