Mike Mosbey named new fire chief

4/29/2016

The Emergency Services Board appointed Mike Mosbey as the new Montgomery County Fire Chief Tuesday night.

Mosbey is a veteran of the dept., most recently serving several years as one of three battalion chiefs.

The ESB interviewed five candidates for the position, two current members of the MCFD and three from outside the dept., a fire dept. spokesman said.

Mosbey will replace Larry Potter, who announced his retirement in late February. Potter’s retirement is effective Aug. 1.

Potter told the Advocate previously that he plans to assist the new chief in the transition before he steps down.

Potter, 62, has spent 37 years in the fire service, the last 13 as chief in Montgomery County. Prior to the that he served with the Winchester Fire Dept., also achieving the rank of chief.

He told the Advocate that he felt it was time to retire to pursue other interests.

The fire dept. maintains between 40 to 45 uniformed firefighters/EMTs/paramedics in addition to the chief and a small support staff.

The Advocate will feature an in-depth story on Mosbey in next week’s issue.
