Emergency personnel were called to another fatal accident June 17—the second in Montgomery County within a week.

Earl Manley, 86, of Sharpsburg, died June 17 following a head-on collision at the Maysville/Bunker Hill Road intersection. The accident occurred around 1 p.m.

According to Ralph Charles, Det./Sgt. with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a red 1998 Ford Ranger driven by Jenny Pelfrey, 41, of Carlisle, was heading north on Maysville when she reportedly crossed over the center line near the Bunker/Maysville intersection and struck a 1994 blue Toyota Camry driven by Manley head-on. Manley was traveling south on Maysville.

Both vehicles ended up in the intersection after they collided. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advised motorists that all lanes of the roadway would be closed for two to six hours and suggested traffic headed to or away from points north of the crash site (Sharpsburg, Flemingsburg, Maysville, etc.) to detour.

Manley was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Coroner Jimmy Adams at 1:48 p.m.

Pelfrey and an occupant, Jason Ring, 38, of Carlisle, were transported to St. Joseph Mt. Sterling for treatment of injuries. Pelfrey was later transferred to the University of Kentucky, where Charles said she is listed in stable condition. She suffered numerous injuries, he said.
Ring was treated and released from the hospital the day of the accident.
An employee of the Judy Store told one media outlet she heard the accident, which she described as sounding not like a crash, but an explosion.

“We looked and saw the truck flying through the air. So we ran out there to see if we could help any of them,” Patricia Pergrem said. “I hope I never have to go through that again, or see another family have to go through that again.”

Charles told the Advocate the accident remains under investigation.
Manley, a native of Bourbon County, was the husband of Nancy Johnson Manley. He was the son of the late Elwood and America Hatton Manley.
He was a lifelong roofer and farmer and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A condolence message left on the guestbook for Manley on Herald and Stewart’s website from Judith Curtis Smith said, “My heart is so heavy to hear of Earl’s passing. He was a sweet and humble person who influenced my life for good as I grew up in Owingsville Branch at church ... my prayers and thoughts are with all of the family at this very difficult time. Love to Nancy and all of the family.”

Manley is also survived by two sons, Randal (Connie) Manley and Wayne (Dora) Manley, both of Carlisle; a daughter, Diane (Russell) Hatton of Salt Lick; two sisters; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, June 20, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
The accident last week was the second in just a week. Another fatal accident happened a week prior at the Spencer/Bypass intersection.
