The Bryan Station girls and Henry Clay boys captured regional track and field championships Friday evening at the Montgomery County High School Track as the school hosted the Class AAA Region VI event for the first time ever.

Coach Ed Stepanchuk and his staff along with numerous volunteers got rave reviews from those on hand for hosting arguably the premier regional track meet in Kentucky.

“Things went really well,” Stepanchuk said. “Thanks to a great effort by everyone involved I think that the teams that came in here left with a positive feeling about our program and our facilities and would welcome the chance to come back again and that’s what we were shooting for.”
Along the way the MCHS squad qualified five athletes in six events for the Kentucky State High School Track and Field championships this Saturday at the University of Kentucky.

“We have a lot of young athletes that are coming on,” he added. “It’s great to see a couple of our seniors get a chance to compete at state along with three of our up and coming athletes.”

Region VI entrants will go into the state with some of the best times and distances in the state.

The top two finishers in each event in the regional qualifies for the state and then everyone else goes into a pool with competitors from across the state with the remaining entrants coming from the best finishers in terms of time and distance.

MCHS senior Aiyanna Jones qualified for the state meet in both the shot put and discus.

Jones finished third in the discus with a toss of just over 114 feet, three inches short of runner-up Halee Hudson, a Scott County senior and less than a foot behind regional champ Chelsea Ford of Woodford County.
Jones threw just over 34 feet in the shot put, less than a half foot out of second place and reached the state thanks to her being one of the top finishers in the regions overall.

Sophomore April Eling qualified in the 800 meter run after finishing second, less than a tenth of a second behind Dunbar’s Annie Vandenberg.

Another MCHS sophomore, Breanna Bowling, qualified for the state in the high jump. She finished second, clearing the same height as Scott County senior Kena Christopher, who won the regional title with fewer misses.

Bowling also made a strong showing in the 100 meter hurdles where she came in fifth in a strong field.

Senior pole vaulter Elizabeth Newkirk was fifth in the region but her height was good enough to place her in the state meet while junior Dustin Townsend was in the same position, finishing fifth in the region but also getting into the state meet.

The MCHS track and field program continues to gain ground, even competing in arguably the toughest region in the state.

With the five Lexington public schools plus Scott County in the region the MCHS competitors were facing a real challenge.

“You have to look at things from the proper perspective and we’re really pleased as a coaching staff in how far so many of our kids have come,” Stepanchuk said. “It’s not always about winning or placing, sometimes it’s just in competing and improving. And we’ve certainly seen a lot of that here in the last couple of seasons.”

Coming up on Saturday at the state meet, Jones will be competing in the discus at 4:30 p.m. and in the shot put at 6 p.m.

Bowling competes in the high jump at 4:30 p.m. with the pole vault competition also getting underway at 4:30 p.m.
Eling will be running in the 800 meter run at 7:40 p.m.

“It’s a beautiful complex and a great event to get to be a part of,” the coach added. “I hope in the years to come we have more and more individuals and relay teams that get a chance to be a part of this.”
