MCHS tennis teams open with easy wins

3/20/2015

The Montgomery County High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams opened up their 2015 season at Easy Walker Park Monday with wins over Rowan County.

“It’s great to have a day like this to play this early in the season,” said boys’ coach Clark Howell as the Indians and Vikings battled in 70-degree temperatures.

The boys’ squad, considered to be a regional contender again, posted an 8-1 victory while Coach Sarah Elam’s girls’ squad won 9-0 over the Lady Vikings.

The Indians, along with Highlands and Harrison County, look to be the top challengers in the region again this year after Montgomery County captured the regional title a year ago. In girls’ competition in the region the Highlands Lady Bluebirds look to be the dominant team with Montgomery County in the mix right behind Ft. Thomas.

In Monday’s season openers the Indians were simply too strong and deep for the Vikings and Lady Vikings, winning most of their matches by run-away scores.

The Indians and Lady Indians, who play almost all of their matches together, were scheduled to take on Scott County Tuesday afternoon at Georgetown and then will have a week off before they travel to Paris’ Garrard Park next Tuesday to face Bourbon County. Their next home match will be a week from today (Thursday) when they take on Richmond Model at Easy Walker Park.

“I really like the schedules we’re going to face this year,” Howell said. “I feel like we’ll be well prepared come regional tournament time if the weather cooperates.”

The schedule includes six home matches at Easy Walker Park. The Indians will be tangling with border rival Clark County both home and away and will also face Clark County along with Harrison County and Campbell County in a pre-regional event.
