Threes go in and the tribe goes out

PARIS—The Bourbon County Colonels figuratively “shot the lights out” last Tuesday night on their home floor and escaped with a 67-65 win over the Montgomery County Indians in the opening round of the 40th District Tournament.

The loss ended Montgomery County’s season with the Tribe posting a 16-12 record while Bourbon County continues on during a season that saw them undergo an early season coaching change, giving them their fourth head coach in three seasons. The Colonels lost the district final two nights later to Paris and took a 9-19 record into this week’s 10th Region Tournament.

“A huge disappointment, naturally,” said Coach Matt Daniel. “They just made plays and kept making them and we were fighting uphill all night.”
The Indians held an early 7-2 lead but when senior guard Landon Sexton hit a three-point shot to give the Colonels a 10-9 advantage. They never trailed again.

The Colonels were able to get to the foul line in the opening period and made six of seven free throws which combined with a couple of three’s by Sexton and a basket by Austin Jones to give Bourbon County a 14-11 lead at the end of the opening period.

That was a trend that would continue all night as the Colonels finished with only nine two-point field goals but made up for that from long range.

By the time the night was over the Colonels made 12 of 18 three-point field goals for a sizzling 66.7 percent and five different players nailed shots from behind the line.

“I’m really proud of the way we continually fought back to stay in the game,” Daniel added.

Which they did.
Bourbon County had an eight point lead in the first half that the Indians reduced to three.

They built that lead back to nine at 37-28 in the third quarter, which turned out to be one of the key junctures in the contest.
Caswell Fuller connected on a three-pointer to cut the lead to 34-28 and then the Indians got the ball back and Cody Parsley drove to the basket, collided with Zack Treilobs and made the basket.

Although it looked like Parsley would be going to the line with a chance to cut the lead to three the call went the other way, Parsley was called for a charge and Bourbon County got the ball back.

The play was so significant in many ways as the entire gym, the Bourbon County fans included, seemed to utter a gasp because Treilobs obviously slid over after Parsley was in the air and also bailed out on the play as well.
The play became even bigger when Bourbon County inbounded the ball down the sideline and reserve Chandler Thomas sank a three-point shot just seconds later with the lead, instead of being three, went right back to nine .The Colonels had their largest lead at 40-30 and were still on top by ten at 45-35 when the third period ended.

That set up a wild final quarter when the Indians scored almost as many points as they had in the first three periods combined.
The Colonels still enjoyed a 66-57 lead with less than a minute to play and then Fuller hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 66-59 and then Fuller and Art Walker hit back-to-back three’s, cutting the lead to 66-65 with 15 seconds to play.

The Indians fouled Ameryon Blackburn and he hit one of two free throws so the Indians had the chance to tie or win the game in the closing seconds but a shot from the right baseline was off the mark and Bourbon County held on for the 67-65 win.

Paris wins district
For the first time in a decade a team from Paris or Bourbon County won a district boys’ basketball title last Thursday night when Paris held off Bourbon County, 53-50.

Bourbon County beat Harrison County in overtime to win the 37th back in 2006.

Paris beat Clark County, 68-49, on Tuesday night to set up the all-Bourbon County final, marking the first time since the 2005-06 season when Montgomery, Clark, Bourbon and Paris were moved into the same district, that Montgomery County and Clark County hadn’t played for a district championships.

Paris lost to Clark County by 23 points during the regular season while Montgomery County beat Bourbon County twice during the season, by 14 and 6 points.

The win for the Greyhounds over the Colonels in the title game marked the third time they have beaten their cross-town rival this season, having captured those other two games by 10 and seven points.
