Lady Indians end season with a clank

PARIS—When you have two primary scorers on a basketball team, taking one away will usually create a major problem.

And that’s how it was Monday night as Bourbon County posted a 49-40 win over Montgomery County in the opening round of the 40th District Tournament at the Bourbon County gymnasium.

With seventh-grader Kennedy Igo out of the line-up because of illness tied the Lady Indians for its fourth lowest point total all season.
The loss ended a rough season for Montgomery County as they finished with an 8-20 record and missed making the regional tournament for the first time since 2000.

The win for Bourbon County was no masterpiece as the Lady Colonels needed an advantage of 12 points at the free throw line to post the nine-point victory and held only a five-point lead with two and a half minutes to play.

Bourbon County improved to 18-11 with the win and advance to the district championship game and the 10th Region Tournament for the first time since 2001.
The Lady Indians certainly defended the Lady Colonels well enough to win.

Thirteen of Bourbon County’s 49 points came at the free throw line in the final period.

The real difference maker for Bourbon County was 6-0 junior center Chanadie Machal who scored 13 points and hit six of 10 shots from the floor. She came in averaging just three points a game but used her height advantage to score easily inside against Montgomery County.
Meanwhile, the Lady Indians were left to settle for perimeter shots that simply didn’t fall.

Of the 44 field goal attempts the Lady Indians had in the game, 25 of those came from behind the three-point line and they made only four.
Despite their shooting woes the Lady Indians made it a game right up until the end.

Freshman Delaney Bromagen, filling the spot vacated by the Igo, hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening quarter as Montgomery County trailed just 12-10 after the first eight minutes.

When senior Alyssa Terrell nailed a three-pointer early in the second quarter Montgomery County had a 15-13 lead.

That, however, turned out to be Montgomery County’s last lead of the game.

The Lady Colonels went on a 13-1 run over the last five and a half minutes of the first half and went to the lockerroom with a 25-16 lead.
Leading scorer Sarah Arnett, chased all over the floor in the game by the Bourbon County defense, got her first points to start the second half and then after Terrell added a basket senior Julia Barker nailed a three-pointer as Montgomery County climbed back to within four points at 27-23.

The Lady Indians would never be that close again although when Delaney Bromagen hit a pair of free throws with two and a half minutes to play the Lady Colonel lead was just 42-37.

Bourbon County was able to hold on as junior guard Haleigh Yasell hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch.

The game marked the end of the high school careers of MCHS seniors Alyssa Terrell, Julia Barker, Hannah Spence, Aiyanna Jones, Kristen Williams and Elizabeth Newkirk.

Bourbon County was led by Sims and Yazell with 13 points each, although Sims, who’ll attend Tennessee State to play basketball next season, had only two free throws in the second half. Machal followed with 13 as those three players combined for 43 of the Lady Colonels 49 points.

Bromagen led Montgomery County with 11 and was the only Montgomery County player to score in double figures.
Montgomery County had defeated Bourbon County 71-49 on Jan. 23 at the MCHS Arena when Arnett scored a career-high 34 points and hit nine three-pointers.

But the Lady Colonels used a combination of players to defend Arnett Monday night and literally matched her anytime she attempted to drive with the ball.

Arnett entered the game 15.6 points per game while Igo carried an average of 13. 3 per game.

Arnett missed all four of her shots in the opening quarter and then didn’t get a field goal attempt in the second period as Coach Bill Watson was able to address most of his team’s defensive effort in her direction.
She finally fought off the defense and hit a driving layup to begin the second half and after hitting a free throw early in the final period she picked up a three-point play to ignite Montgomery County’s final comeback attempt midway through he final period.

Not only had Montgomery County not missed a regional tournament since 2000, the Lady Indians had played in the last 10 regional title games, winning eight.

Clark County 74
Paris 26
The defending 10th Region champion Lady Cardinals posted their 19th win of the season Monday night and earned the chance to defend their regional crown next week on their home floor with an easy 74-26 victory over a young Paris squad.

The good news for the Lady Hounds of Coach Cary Barr is that all 26 of his team’s points were scored by players who’ll be returning for the Hounds next season.

Clark held an early 14-5 lead and then went on a 17-0 run sparked by senior forward Sandra Skinner that led to a 44-7 lead at the half.
