Paris earns 54-51 win, ends Tribe streak at 26

Junior forward Juwan Dumphord connected on a three-pointer from the right wing with five seconds to play last Tuesday night at the MCHS Arena as the Paris Greyhounds snapped a 26-game losing streak to the Montgomery County Indians with a 54-51 district win.

“Just give Paris and Coach Brooks a lot of credit,” said MCHS head coach Matt Daniel. “They made the plays and we didn’t and they deserved to win. They earned it.”

The Indians were their own worst enemy as they shot the ball poorly from behind the three-point line, hitting just five of 25 long-range shots.

“I really wasn’t disappointed in our shot selection,” Daniel said. “But it’s obvious that we’ve got to get better at taking the ball inside for the nights when we’re not shooting well.”

The Greyhounds, in their second season under former Paris player and long-time girls’ coach there, Terrence Brooks, turned the game around in the third quarter when they scored more points than they had the entire second half.

After making just nine of 26 field goal attempts and getting out-rebounded 23-10 in the first half the Greyhounds made 11 for 20 in the second half and played even on the glass with the Indians after the intermission.

In retrospect, Montgomery County didn’t take advantage of their opportunities in the first half.
Despite hitting a better percentage from the field and dominating the glass in the first 16 minutes the Indians had just a 27-22 lead.
Montgomery County scored first in the second half for a 29-22 advantage but then the Greyhounds went on a 9-0 run to take the lead and the Indians never had the advantage again.

Junior forward Koebe Garrard led the Greyhounds with 24 points and eight rebounds while junior guard James Clark hit a trio of three-point shots to score nine and sophomore forward Jakobi Wells also had nine.
Junior center Shelby Combs was dominant early in the game and early in the second half and finished with 13 points while junior guard Caswell Fuller scored 11 and junior guard Art Walker added 10.

Junior forward Cody Parsley scored eight points and hit a pair of three-pointers in the final period as the Indians battled back after Paris had taken a 46-37 lead at the end of three quarters.

With Paris in front 50-42 senior Braxton Hopkins scored inside and Parsley did the same to cut the lead to 50-46 with 2:20 to play.
Then Parsley hit a three-point shot to make it 50-49 with 1:39 on the clock.

Garrard was fouled with :50 left and hit one of two shots for a 51-49 Paris lead and then Fuller hit a pair of free throws at the :43 mark to tie the game at 51-51.

Paris took a time out with :22 to play and ran the clock down to the five second mark before Dumphord, who hadn’t taken a shot since the opening minutes of the game, drained the three-point shot.

The Indians got a time out and got up a three-pointer from the wing but it was off the mark.

Paris improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the district and then came back on Friday night and defeated Bourbon County to go to 2-0 in district play.
The Indians fell to 1-2 and 0-1 in the district.

Madison Central 63,
MCHS 45
The Madison Central Indians pulled away in the second half as Montgomery County struggled shooting the ball in a 63-45 loss at the MCHS Arena Thursday night.

Montgomery County had beaten the 2013 state champions twice last season but Central won this time around with an outstanding defensive effort that limited the Tribe to just 31 percent shooting from the field, including a mere 22 percent from the three-point line.
“I’m not really concerned about the shooting,” said Coach Matt Daniel, “but I am concerned about our energy level. I didn’t think we played with a lot of intensity and that’s all on me. It’s my responsiblity to get these guys ready to play and I haven’t done a good job with that so far.”
Central was without one of their key players, center Sam Jones who was out with an injury. But the Indians were 3-2 and coming off a 60-47 win over Clark County.

Montgomery County led 12-10 in the early going as they established Shelby Combs early as an offensive threat on the inside.
But Central came back to lead 19-12 with a nine-point run to end the opening period including three-point field goals by Grant Brockman and Seth Richardson coming off the bench.
Junior forward Cody Parsley scored seven of his 10 points in the second period for Montgomery County to help the Indians keep the game close. They trailed 32-24 at the half.

Sam Hodgson hit a free throw early in the second half to cut Central’s lead to 32-25 but that was as close as the Indians would get.
Madison Central stretched the lead to 48-33 at the end of the third quarter, thanks mainly to the inside play of junior Jacob Taylor who had five points and five rebounds during the period.
In the final period Central had only two field goals but connected on nine of 10 free throws to widen their lead.

“Their defense kept us from getting into our offense and that left us settling for o
