Mt. Sterling Police have arrested a suspect in the Dec. 2 attempted robbery of Payday Express on Young Lane.
Russell Giles, 68, of Mt. Sterling, is charged with second-degree attempted robbery.

An employee of the business told police she thought she recognized Giles, a previous customer, as the suspect who tried to rob the store.
When police investigated they found that Giles had a car that matched the description of the one used in the robbery attempt, MSPD Sgt. Terry Johnson said.

After police arrested Giles on an unrelated warrant he reportedly confessed to the Payday Express crime, Johnson said.

Police received a call last week that a white male wearing a black hoodie had entered the business and demanded money from an employee.
The suspect then left empty handed in a black Kia with a sticker that read “Green’s,” according to the employee’s statement.

Police are encouraging the public to be more alert for suspicious activity during the holidays when robberies tend to increase. They can report such activity at 498-8720.
