Swimmers take 2nd in Russell Co. event

11/21/2014

Even with three of their top swimmers sidelined, the Montgomery County High School swim team had a successful opening to their 2014-2015 season Saturday.

Coach Lainey Neal’s squad traveled to Russell County High School to compete in the Laker Fall Preview and finished second out of the 19 teams that were entered.

The Indians were without freshman Ashleigh Richard-son, junior Sam May and freshman Travis Toy, a trio that certainly could have enabled Montgomery County to close the gap on top finisher Russell County.
“Certainly a great start to the season,” Neal said. “This is a team that has some depth so that even without some of our key swimmers we were still able to be really competitive. Plus, we’re a really young team with only one senior on both squads.”

The Indians next outing will be Dec. 15 when they travel to Winchester to swim against Clark County.

Freshman Benton Patrick led the team by scoring 45 points. Her best finish was second place in the back stroke. Julianne Williams added 19 points and Cameron Reddix scored 16.

Eighth-grader Hank Neal was the top scorer among the Montgomery County boys with 21 points while Marc McGinnis tallied 16.
