Senior forward Nolan Moser scored a hat trick last Thursday night to lead the Montgomery County Indians to a 6-1 win over Clark County in the 39th District title match at Cunningham Field.

The district title was the fourth in a row for the Indians as they improved their record to 19-2-1 on the season.

The Indians advance to the 10th Region Tournament this week at Scott High in northern Kentucky where they were scheduled to play the winner of the Bishop Brossart-Harrison County quarterfinal round matchup in the semifinal round Thursday night.

The Indians had a 13-match winning streak earlier in the season, a new school record, and they extended their current streak to five matches.
Bishop Brossart enters the region with a 14-5-1 record and went into Tuesday night’s game as a heavy favorite over Harrison County but should the Indians get past that matchup on Thursday the Scott High Eagles will likely be waiting.

Scott High has a 16-2-1 record and knocked the Indians out of tournament play last year.

“They have one of the best goal scorers in the state in Luke Treadway,” noted Indian coach Nick Pannell. “He’s missed some games this year but he’s very talented.

“And they have two other players in Blake Schneider and Devin Morgan that can put the ball in the net for them. It’ll be a real challenge if we face them but I think we’ll be ready.”

Montgomery County has already established a new school record for scoring with 103 goals in their 22 matches. It’s the first time an MCHS soccer team has gone over the 100-goal mark.
Meanwhile, the defense has allowed just 20 goals, less than a goal per game on average.

“This team has been really balanced and that’s what it takes to advance against good competition,” Pannell added. “From this point on the team that takes advantage of opportunities when they come around and limits the other teams’ chances is going to win.”
Here’s a recap of the 39th District Tournament action:

MCHS 7,
Bourbon County 1
The Indians dominated the Colonels from the opening minutes and used contributions from everyone on the squad to post the 7-1 victory over the Colonels in the opening round of the district tournament.
Junior forward Alex Shkrabba scored a pair of goals and five other players found the net over the course of the evening while the defense limited the Colonels’ chances.

Junior forward Caswell Fuller scored a goal and also had two assists in the match while sophomore midfielder Zach Hill had a goal and an assist.

Senior forward Nolan Moser, the Indians’ leading scorer on the season, added a goal along with senior midfielder Marco Ortega and sophomore midfielder Chandler Wyman.

The Indians had beaten Bourbon County, 4-0, during the regular season in a match played at Paris.

MCHS 6,
Clark County 1
The Indians scored early and led 6-0 before the Cards got on the scoreboard in the district final.

The Tribe had beaten the Cardinals, 3-2, early in the season in Winchester, but Pannell took a slightly different approach this time around.

“When we played over there we weren’t very focused,” he said. “I just had the players prepare for this game a little differently and it seemed to make a difference.”

Senior Nolan Moser, Montgomery County’s leading scorer on the season, had a hat trick in the contest and also added an assist.
Alex Shkrabba, right behind Moser on the scoring lineup, added a goal as did Caswell Fuller, who also had two assists.

Zach Hill completed the scoring and he also had an assist while Spencer Holder and Marco Ortega each had an assist in the contest.
Hunter Cole had another solid game in the goal for the Tribe with assistance from Corey Lawill.

Among the leaders
Montgomery County is among the top teams in the state in several statistical categories.
The Indians rank eighth in Kentucky in goal scoring, averaging 4.6 goals per match entering the district final.

Montgomery County is also tied for 11th in scoring defense, allowing 0.9 goals per contest and they are fourth in margin of difference over their opponent with a mark of 3.7 per match.

The Indians trail only Letcher Central, Daviess County and Bowling Green in that category.
Montgomery County has out-scored the opposition by an average of 3.7 goals per game.

Although the Indians don’t show up on the individual lists, Moser is close to the leaderboard in scoring while Fuller is just out of the top 15 players in assists per game.
Fifteen different players have had either a goal or an assist for the Indians.
