The Beard Battle of the Bluegrass will be held Saturday at the Mt. Sterling Golf and Country Club to benefit the local Bikes for Tykes program.
Bikes for Tykes provides new bicycles for Christmas to children who might not ordinarily be able to get one. The program, started by the late pastor L. Paul Prather at Bethesda Church, is now run by Prather’s daughter, Cathi Taylor.
Saturday’s beard competition is hosted by the Hillbilly Beardsmen, said the group’s treasurer, Tabatha Sturgill.
There is a $10 cover charge with proceeds going for Bikes for Tykes. There is also a silent auction and live music. The silent auction will include 50 to 60 items, including beard and mustache care products, Sturgill said.
The event begins at 5 p.m. and will last until midnight. The competition begins at 7.
Women can also participate in the competition. Two women’s events are planned, Sturgill said.
One is in the craft beard category, which includes any beard made from paper mache or other craft products. The other category is for realistic beard, which can include those made with any type of hair.
Sturgill said the club wanted to get involved in a project that helps children.
“It’s a great opportunity to make someone’s Christmas,” she said. “What kid doesn’t like riding a bike ... it’s a great way to give back.”
Categories of competition range from freestyle to natural/styled mustache, full beard/styled mustache and Joe Dirt.
The event is open to the public.
