Lions Club Follies to be held April 25-27

The Mt. Sterling Lions Club will host the 66th annual Follies event this year.
Whereas in the past, the show has featured mostly country acts, this year will be a little different, Lions Club President Opal Smith said.
“We had several people say they’d like to hear some rock and roll and other stuff, so we just thought we’d do a new show,” Smith said.
In addition to country and rock and roll, audiences can expect to see more comedy than usual this year, in addition to some southern gospel and bluegrass acts.
Some artists and performances include Bill Curtis, doing a tribute to Conway Twitty, the Hall Family, Glenn Wells, Haley Kelley, Jamie Willoughby and Billie Reneé. Smith also said that for the group’s comedy routine, audiences can expect Si Robertson from Duck Dynasty to make an appearance, along with possibilities of Shania Twain, The Soggy Bottom Boys and the Blues Brothers, just to name a few. While she admits the real personas won’t be there, she said she thinks the portrayals will be just as fun.
“It’s going to be an action packed two hour show,” she said.
The Follies is one of the club’s largest fundraisers held each year, in addition to the Christmas show and magic show. Proceeds from the events go toward helping children in Montgomery County acquire eyeglasses. The club’s goal is to provide one pair each month to a child in need.
“We feel it’s such a need because of the way the economy is now, parents just can’t afford to buy eyeglasses,” Smith said. “Our goal is to provide eyeglasses for the needy children of Montgomery County so that they can see to have a better future.”
In addition, the Lions Club has made it its mission to be more active in the community.
“The Lions Club made a goal this year to become more visible in our community by doing a service project each month,” Smith said. “We want to let the community know we are here for them.”
In January, the club helped by collecting food for a local church food pantry. In February, club members collected cat and dog food to donate to the local animal shelter. Club members helped collect and recycle old medicine with the Mt. Sterling Police Dept. in March, and in April, the group raised $831 for Big Brothers-Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake.
Smith said she hopes community members will come out and see the show and help the Lions Club make a difference.
The show runs April 25-27 in the Montgomery County High School Auditorium, and will start at 8:01 p.m. each night. Tickets are $6 in advance from any Lions Club member, or can be purchased at Toy’s Kentucky Food Store or Time Warner Cable. Tickets are also available at the door for $7.
