KSP searching for leads in unsolved cases

1/4/2013

By Tom Marshall
Senior Advocate writer
The Kentucky State Police are taking a unique approaching to solving 52 of the state’s most heinous unsolved crimes.
In 2010, the KSP distributed more than 8,000 decks of playing cards to prisons across Kentucky providing information from unsolved homicide or missing persons cases. Since that time three cases have been solved, a release said.
The KSP hopes that sharing information with the public again will provide fresh leads that can help solve cases and bring some closure to families, the release said.
Among the cases featured in the cards is the death investigation involving Nicole Penix Vanzant. She was last seen with a man Jan. 19, 2009, in Frenchburg.
Vanzant got out of the man’s vehicle and left walking on Frenchburg Hill. On April 20, 2009, her remains were located in the Red River Gorge area. No cause of death has been determined.
Vanzant, who formerly lived in Montgomery County and went to school here, still has family here as well.
KSP Trooper Michael Webb reviews the leads as they come in and disseminates the information to local posts, a release said.
“We have received hundreds of tips in the past two years that we hope will lead to more cases being solved,” Webb said in a release. “Not only do these tips assist with solving cases, they sometimes provide additional information about other criminal activity taking place.”
The KSP has placed copies of the complete deck of cards on its web site at www.kentuckystatepolice.org/unsolved_cases.htm.
